Introduction by Jimmy Flemion

Song 5 off of the "Starjob" EP is "I Only Play 4 Money". This song was actually comprised from 2 songs. The first song "Prick", I wrote on February 19, 1993 in my upstairs bedroom. The second song "I Only Play 4 Money", was created on October 19, 1985 in our living room. We had a show that night at Sal's Bar in St. Cloud, Minnesota and earlier that day during practice, Dennis and I came up with "I Only Play 4 Money" and later debuted the song that night. Here are the lyrics to "Prick":<br&>

Prick Lyrics

I don't do interviews<br&> I won't sign autographs<br&> Don't you love the star when he's a prick?<br&>

If you take my picture<br&> Your camera's smashed<br&>

If you send me fan mail<br&> I won't write back<br&> Don't you love the star when he's a prick?<br&>

Here are the original lyrics to "I Only Play 4 Money". The only difference is the word (one) was substituted for the word (man):<br&>

Original Lyrics

I only play 4 money<br&> I don't give a fuck about the fans<br&> I only play for money<br&> I don't give a shit if you dance<br&>

'Cause you're diggin' on the star<br&> 'Cause you're diggin' on the man (one) who's gone so far<br&>

I only play 4 money<br&> I don't give a fuck about the fans<br&> I only play 4 money<br&> So keep your autograph books at home<br&> I don't give a damn<br&>

'Cause you're diggin on the star<br&> 'Cause you're diggin' on the man who's gone so far<br&>

I only play 4 money<br&>

Notes

The chord progression for "Prick" is: G Major / D major (G b in Bass) / G Major / D Major (G b in Bass) / G major / B minor / B minor (G in bass) / G b Sus 4 / G b minor.<br&>

The chord progression for "I Only Play 4 Money" is: D Major / C Major / B minor / G Major / D Major / C major / B minor / G Major / D Major / G Major / C Major / A Major.<br&>

At the very end of the song after the "You've gone far" lyrics, there is a new chord progression. Where the C Major chord usually goes to the A Major chord, it now goes from C Major into this new chord progession: D Major / B b Major / C Major / G major. Billy Corgan thought a new section was needed here and suggested these chords in his living room. He also suggested combining the songs "Prick" and "I Only Play 4 Money". Hey guess what? He also suggested a talk over rap speech during the end of the song. So at the end of the song I speak of rock 'n roll. The exact content of the rock talk is unknown to me as it was improvised, but if the faders were pulled down on the console, while listening back to the master tapes we would all know the answer. At the end of the song I make a reference to "Modern Drummer" magazine being on the phone for Dennis because of his knockout drumming.<br&>

Here are the final sewn lyrics as they appear on the "Starjob" EP for "I Only Play 4 Money":<br&>

E.P. Lyrics

'Cause you're diggin' on the star<br&> 'Cause you're diggin' on the one who's gone so far<br&>

If you take my picture<br&> Your camera's smashed<br&>

You've gone far<br&>

Notes

The actual writing part of the "I Only Play 4 Money" section of the song, is not remembered by Dennis or I, so we give each other half credit on that one. I tend to remember that Dennis wrote the "I don't give a shit if you dance" lyric.<br&>

If people are offended by the "F" grenade, take it easy. Remember that the word "fuck" is not a word at all, but rather an acronym that was used when prostitutes were brought into jails in early England. To alleviate writer's cramp, the jailers would use a shortened pen stroke and write on their sheet of paper (FUCK) which was short for (for use of carnal knowledge).<br&>

The track "I Only Play 4 Money", contains vocals, acoustic and electric guitar by myself, Billy Corgan on bass guitar, and Dennis on drums. Alas the guitar solo. I did the guitar solo at the end of the song in one straight take, with Billy punching in the effects pedals while I played.<br&>

Billy Corgan and Eddie Vedder have both performed this song with us live a handful of times each.<br&>

Do we only play 4 money? Well we did play a benefit once for "W.O.W" Wendy Williams of The Plasmatics in 1981. After the Milwaukee Police Department shut down The Plasmatics show at The Palms for Wendy simulating masturbation with a sledgehammer, they arrested her and beat her up and threw her in the back of the paddy wagon. The benefit included our version of "Sometimes I Feel It" by The Plasmatics that I performed with shaving cream on my chest and white underwear (ala Wendy O. except for the whipped cream). This was years before The Naked Cowboy y'all worship. By the way I did have my picture taken with The Naked Cowboy in N.Y.C. for all concerned and also did get Wendy O.'s autograph at the Milwaukee County Coutrthouse and subsequently sold it years later at a record convention for 8 dollars.<br&>
